SINGAPORE SHARES "SMART CITY" EXPERIENCE

An inter-ministerial team is currently studying the smart city management model from Singapore and will soon adopt the system to fit the Cambodian social context.

In the meantime, Cambodia government has also already drafted plans to transform several key cities into smart cities, aiming at establishing an inclusive ASEAN smart cities network.

The plan was released during an online “Planning for Smart Cities” conference held on 12 July.

Attended by over 200 provincial governors and relevant officers, the conference was organized by the Royal School of Administration in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Service, the Civil Service College of Singapore, and Temasek International Foundation. The programme also aims to increase the understanding of the role of leaders, civil servants and institutions in supporting public administration reform.

Minister of Public Service HE Prum Sokha said during the meeting that learning from developed countries such as Singapore was a good starting point to collect inputs. However, the smart city model will be adapted to the context of Cambodian society.

“The term smart city is not just about digital advancement, but means a livable city,” he added.

Thus far, the government has selected a few provinces as potential targets for smart city projects including Sihanoukville and Siem Reap.
